Log Cabin Baby Quilt Finished

Here is my last post before leaving Greece to spend the summer in France. Despite my troubles after injuring my spine, I managed little by little to finish hand quilting this baby quilt for my seven months' old grand daughter. It is the reason why the quilting is rather basic...

Writing this post from my bed, where I have to remain lying for two months! 

This is my misadventure :

Two weeks ago I was so happy to prepare the house for the arrival of my third son D. with his wife and his 3 1/2 years old and 16 months' old sons. The first morning of their staying here, as my 3 1/2 years old grandson M. ran downstairs to jump into my arms to kiss me, I lost my balance and fell backwards on the tiled floor with him in the arms... result : a broken lumbar vertebra, three days in hospital and two months immobilization! Fortunately the child did not hurt.

Few weeks ago I had taken some pictures of the various projects I was working on before the accident happened. One of them was completed : the knitted jacket. I am very proud of it as it is the first time I created my own pattern. I found inspiration from an old magazine pattern, I made a sample (first time!), I took my measures, made some calculations (with many difficulties...) and here it is : the perfect little jacket I always wanted for wearing above my dark dresses!

I was about to finish the hand quilting of the Log Cabin baby quilt for my 3 months old granddaughter, who will have to wait for a while now before she is offered it...

I bought templates in order to start a new quilt with big hexagons...

I ordered those wonderful hand dyed yarns from TreLiz with the idea of knitting a colorful shawl...

All plans postponed...

Basting

Today I am preparing my Log Cabin baby quilt for hand quilting. It is a part of the quilting process that many quilters don't like very much, but which I enjoy as much as all the different stages of quilting.

You can find the method I use in MY TUTORIAL, where you will understand the reason of the spoon on the quilt.

Baby Log Cabin Quilt Top INSTRUCTIONS

Children and grandchildren are now back to their own places. My home is now clean and tidy again, and here I am quilting and knitting again. As you can see on the picture, the weather here in Athens is very cold, we have snow for the second time since Christmas and it's the perfect weather for home activities. I enjoyed displaying my quilt on the snow to take a beautiful picture!

This quilt top was done in a week-end time. It is so easy and quick to sew Log cabin blocks following the method shown in MY TUTORIAL!

Each finished block measures 10.5"x10.5"(26.67cm x 26.67cm).

The top measures 38.5"x 50.5" (98cm x 128.27cm).

To make this top I cut strips of 2"width, as I go along, not making any calculations either on the length or on how much fabric I need (too bad... or lazy in maths!).

I chose fabrics from the line Rapture (Subtle Joy Palette) of Pat Bravo for Art Gallery.

Liberty Log Cabin Baby Girl Crib Quilt Finished

Instead of hand quilting, I thought of tying this quilt with knots for a change, as I already did twice in the past : here and here. This way of binding, plus the very light poly batting, gives as a result a very fluffy, light and comfy baby quilt. I am really very pleased with it! And I think that the knots bring a funny touch for a baby.

As I told you before, there are three babys to be born in my circle. This quilt is for the first one, expected next July : a little girl. I am pleased I finished it, so that I can bring it with me to France next month. The two other babys, one boy and one we don't know yet boy or girl, will appear in autumn, so I will  prepare their quilts when I come back from France, end of August.

Knots

My Scrappy Log Cabin top is finished, basted as shown here and tied with knots.

The border is machine sewn as shown here. 

Folded and put in my quilting bag, ready to be taken with me tomorrow to our Monday's meeting, where I will sew the border by hand as shown here.

I add this pictures for the ones interested in the knot method I used for tying this quilt.

I found it in a French book, but I suppose you can find it in English on the web. Although it is understandable just by looking at the pictures.

It is called the Pompom Stitch because, once the quilt washed, it will look like a pompom.

Scrappy Log Cabin Project

While hand quilting my Liberty Four Patch quilt I started a new project with the same fabrics plus some other scraps : a baby crib quilt with Log Cabin blocks separated by strips.

For the central squares I cut 3"x 3".

For the strips I cut 1.75" width.

The finished block measures 8"x 8".

The finished top will measure 24"x 37".

In my circle there are three babies to be born soon : one next July and two next autumn! This means another three baby quilts to offer... how great, I love sewing baby quilts!

Sea and Sand Log Cabin Quilt

My sister just sent me those pictures of the quilt I offered her for her birthday. You can see the progress of this quilt here and here, and closer pictures of it finished here. 

I called this Log Cabin quilt "Sea and Sand" because I chose the colors in accordance with the place where my sister spends the summers in the south of France near the sea. She decided to use it as a wall hanging and I must say I am very pleased with the decorative impact it has in her lounge, although it looks smaller in the pictures than it is in the reality.

Last week my sister came to visit me in Athens and I offered her birthday present : the Log Cabin quilt. As you can see on the picture, she is so happy with it! She will hang it on the main wall of her lounge in her house near the sea. When she will send me pictures of it, I will post them here.

We had a great time visiting Athens with a friend and my daughter, the weather was marvellous. We enjoyed some great walks through the old streets of Athens, in the museums... On some pictures you can see the hill of Acropolis. 

The Marottes I show in the last two pictures are presents my sister brought me from Paris. She found them in an antique shop. They are antiques from the end of the nineteenth century and at that time they were displayed in the shop windows to present hats. I love them and I think that they give a very special dramatic effect to my room.

Blue Quilt Hand Binding

This is the last touch to my blue Log Cabin : I am sewing the border on the reverse side of the quilt as shown HERE. As usual I enjoy this relaxing phase, sewing in the garden with a cup of coffee next.

Blue Log Cabin Top

My Log Cabin top started last week is finished! The piecing was quickly done, what took more time was,
as usual, the display of the blocks, and at the end it did not turn out the way I expected to!
I had planned to emphasize the central squares of the blocks

I was so enthusiastic about the color and the design of this fabric by Marcia Derse that I thought of
emphasizing it by placing it in the large square center of each block, so that it is brought out.

Although it is an evidence, I realize (late) that with Log Cabin pattern, and in general, if you want to emphasize the center block, you have to choose either a complete different color than the stripes, or a very strong value, dark or light. Here the value of this fabric was not contrasting enough with the blue strips. It would have made a striking contrast with the light turquoise fabric I used in the strips, which color is the one that is finally brought out. I must say that, though different than expected, I am rather satisfied with the final result. 

As regards the quilting, I am hesitating between a straight line design and a circular one. The advice of all my quilters friends would be very much appreciated.
