Simple Organic Baby Quilt

Organic fabrics

Organic backing

Wool batting

As soon as I finished my Double Four Patch top I started a new baby quilt. How pleasant it is to work on a quick and simple project!

Last week my third grandson was born and I am going to visit my son's family in London next November and bring the quilt with me. To start this quilt I have been waiting to learn wether the baby would be a boy or a girl, as I wanted to make one really boyish or girlish. Thus the project had to be very quickly done.

I chose printed organic fabrics with blue and white bears and a dotty blue and white fabric for the backing. The batting is 100% wool.

For the quilting beginners I am preparing a tutorial for this baby quilt from A to Z, with all the measurements.

Double 4 Patch and Apple Pie

Last Monday, early in the morning, for our first quilting bee meeting after the summer, I thought of making an American Old Fashion apple pie. I found a recipe on Pinterest and adapted it. The crust I did is a classical French "pate brisee". For the filling I followed the recipe, with just a little less sugar.

I forgot to take a picture of the apple pie just out of the stove. When I remembered it was more than half eaten!

This week I went on with my double 4 patch blocks. I finished 10 more and have another 6 more to sew.
Together I am preparing a tutorial for such a block.

I ordered the batting from USA : Hobbs Heirloom 80/20, as I read from various sites that it is ok for wall hanging quilts. I hope to receive it in two weeks, and be able to give it to be quilted.

Double Four Patch on the Board Again

Fabrics

Since my last post about this UFO, eight months have already passed... and only four blocks more... a shame!
My goal for fall was to finish it, so that's what I am trying to do right now. I took all the stuff from its box, hanged the unfinished and crumpled top on the design board, and let's star!

I have been knitting a lot recently... not very eager to start the UFO's finishing job! But this week-end will be quilting! The weather is not hot anymore... no excuse anymore!

Scrappy Log Cabin Project

Fabric selection

While hand quilting my Liberty Four Patch quilt I started a new project with the same fabrics plus some other scraps : a baby crib quilt with Log Cabin blocks separated by strips.

For the central squares I cut 3"x 3".
For the strips I cut 1.75" width.

The finished block measures 8"x 8".

The finished top will measure 24"x 37".

In my circle there are three babies to be born soon : one next July and two next autumn! This means another three baby quilts to offer... how great, I love sewing baby quilts!

Shades of Grey

My twenty Windmill blocks are ready to be assembled for another baby quilt. Since yesterday I tried various combinations on the design board. When my daughter came this morning she disarranged everything
until she told me that this makes her dizzy and disappeared! So I remained alone in front of those three options and I think I will choose the third one.

Next post I will write the tutorial of this quilt top for beginners who want to make a very quick and easy baby quilt.

Double Four Patch progress

Bean soup
Fasolada

Again I did not progress a lot either in quilting or in knitting. The reason is that I had to spend all the week at my daughter's to help her with her baby because she had a stiff neck and could hardly stand from her bed!

I did a few more double four patch blocks, I knitted for a while in the evening in front of TV, and most of all I cooked for us and for my daughter. Among other dishes, I prepared this traditional Greek winter soup called Fasolada, and I took a picture to show you how it looks like. It is done with beans, carrots, celery, onions and tomatoes and of course a lot of olive oil.

First of all, I wish to thank everyone for your encouragements in my last post, on my progressing this UFO. It helped me a lot! The proof is here : I have put it back on the design board and prepared my ready blocks to start again. I have added two lines and a half on the down part yesterday, but I already see that I will have to make some changes in the blocks setting. If ever you have some comments to make about the layout of those blocks, please do, I would be glad to read them and take them into account!

In my previous post I showed you a baby crib bumper, and promised a tutorial. However, in the meantime I received a mail informing me that there is a potential danger in using crib bumpers. After checking and reading this link I decided not to write the tutorial I had prepared. My next tutorial will be for a pinwheel baby quilt... hoping there is not any danger in using baby quilts!

In the meantime, as a new year starts, I decided to have a look at my UFOs stored in transparent boxes, and to move forward... rather to try...  There is this Double Four Patch top abandoned half way (what a pity) for more urgent baby quilts sewing! I would like to finish it as it is one of my favorites. I used Civil War prints with some wonderful colors, such as the blue and the purple ones. The problem is how to go on with it when babies are being born one after the other in my family and friends and I always have a new baby quilt to sew...
