Herringbone Baby Quilt INSTRUCTIONS

Here are the pictures of my Herringbone baby quilt finished and offered to my niece in Paris.

The gray color recalls Paris' sky, the blue is for the baby boy and the yellow gives a sunny touch.

For this quilt I did 80 blocks of 4.5" x 4.5 each (11.5 cm)

To make the triangles I cut strips of 5" wide (12.7 cm) from each color, then squares of 5" (12.7 cm) and then cut diagonal to obtain 2 triangles. 

The final size of the finished quilt is 32" x 40" (81.5 x 101.5 cm)

Herringbone Baby Quilt

Feeling so sorry for being late on my posting : these pictures were taken mid-september. Since then the quilt was achieved and delivered to my niece in Paris!

Before showing it completed, I wanted to share with you the progress of it and the hand quilting.

I hurried to finish it before leaving for Paris last month. The last stitch was sewn the night before flying, and the label sewn in Paris!

Next post will show this baby quilt finished and photographed in the future baby's room.

Windmill HST Baby Quilt Tutorial

Measurements :

Finished block : 7.25"

Finished top : 29" x 36.25"

To make this quilt you will need 5 shades of grey fabrics

from light grey to dark grey. 9" of each one.

Fold your 9" fabric in 2 from seam to seam.

Cut it in 2 lengthwise.

You obtain 2 strips of 4.50"width.

Put 4 strips over each other and cut squares of 4.50".

Cut them in diagonal.

You obtain those triangles.

Put two different shades triangles right side against right side,

and sew them on the diagonal side.

Trim the corners this way.

You obtain this unit.

Open press it.

Lay your 4 units this way.

Sew 2 units together.

Press on the dark side (always).

You obtain those 2 new units.

Sew them together and open press.

You block is ready.

To make your quilt top, arrange your blocks the way it pleases you and then assemble  

them this way :

Sew four blocks together for your first row.

Go on this way with the next 4 rows.

Last step : sew the 5 rows together.

Half Square Triangle (HST) TUTORIAL with Layer Cake

For this little quilt I chose a Layer Cake 

from Moda, line Hometown. 

I think the colors are suitable for a baby girl or a baby boy.

In fact with one layer Cake I have just enough 

fabric to sew two baby quilts.

I put 4 layers together and cut them in 2 triangles.

Again I cut them in 2 parts.

I obtain 16 triangles.

I sew them 2 by 2 ...

... in a continuous way.

I press the seam on the side.

One seam on the right and one seam on the left.

When all the blocks are ready, I use my iron

to open and press the seam.

 I cut again the blocks to be exactly 23/23 cm.

Then I begin to assemble 4 blocks,

after chosing a suitable arrangement.

  

I sew each row of 4 blocks,

pressing all the seams the same side.

Next row, I press the seams the opposite way.

I press open the horizontal seam.

Finished top.

 I will show the ready completed quilt soon, once quilted and binded.
