Double Four Patch Tutorial

The following pattern is given for a finished 8.00" x 8.00" block

You will need fabrics of three different volumes of colors :

One dark for the small size squares

One light for the small size squares 

One medium for the large and medium size squares

With your medium volume fabric cut a rectangle of 9"x4.50" 

Then cut it in two.

Still with your medium volume fabric, cut a rectangle of 10"x2.5"

Then cut it in 4 squares of 2.5"x2.5" each.

With your dark volume fabric, cut a rectangle of 12"x1.5"

then cut it in 8 squares of 1.5"x1.5" each.

With your light volume fabric, cut a rectangle of 12"x1.5"

then cut it in 8 squares of 1.5"x1.5" each.

Place your squares this way.

Sew the small dark and light squares together, right side against right side.

Press the seams towards the dark squares.

Go on assembling to obtain a 4 Patch block.

Press the seams open.

Sew your 4 patch blocks with the medium size squares.

Sew together as seen above, to obtain a double 4 patch block.

Add to your double 4 Patch block your large size square.

Sew right side against right side.

Assemble the 2 half blocks right side against right side.

Press and trim seams to get a perfect 8.50"x8.50" block.

Easy Log Cabin Tutorial

Today I will show you the EASIEST possible way to make a LOG CABIN block.

WITHOUT measuring any strip length!

Finished block

The finished block measures 7 1/4" x 7 1/4"

Selected fabrics

My fabric selection : a red center, three dark pink and three light beige. 

You can use any colors, but always a dark side and a light side.

Center

For the central square, cut 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"

Strips ready

Cut your strips from the Cross Grain (from selvage to selvage), width 1 1/2".

Two squares

The first piece to add to the red center is a square, same dimensions as the center.

Two squares pieced

 Piece those two squares right side against right side. Open and press. Turn once CLOCKWISE.

Add the strip of the same fabric, sew right side against right side.

Cut the remaining length of the strip.

First row

Open and press. Turn once CLOCKWISE

Add the light color strip for the second row.

Cut the remain. 

Go on the same way all the time for the other rows, always turning ONCE CLOCKWISE

 and ALTERNATING two dark strips and two light strips.

Sixth row

Press hot without moving your iron.

Your block is now finished, you may just need to trim the sides to get an accurate square of 7 1/2".

Tutorial for an Easy and Quick Flying Geese Block

With the measures I will give you, you will obtain a four units Flying Geese block

10" x 5 3/4" (once trimed).

Cut ONE large square 6 1/2" for the 4 centre triangles

and FOUR 3 1/2" for the 8 (what I call) background triangles.

With a sharp pencil draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each small square.

Place two small squares on the big square, right side against right side, as shown above.

Sew along each side of the line, at 1/4".

Cut on the line.

This is what you obtain.

Open and press.

On each obtained piece place one square, right side against right side.

Again, sew at 1/4" on each side of the line and cut on the line.

Doing so, you obtain four rectangles 5 3/4" x 3 1/8".
Trim the sides.

Piece them together. Press without opening.
Then trim the four sides to get a  perfect 10" x 5 3/4" rectangle.

Tutorial for a Quick and Easy Chevron Zig Zag Quilt

Baby girl quilt top : size 47 inches / 34 inches.

Fabric selection

For this project I selected 7 different fabrics.

Fold your fabrics in two and cut bands of 7 inches width.

Put 4 bands over each other and cut squares of 7/7 inches.

Arrange pairs.

With each pair, put both fabrics right side against right side, and sew all along the 4 sides.

Pair of squares sewn all around.

Cut the 2 diagonals and you obtain 4 double triangle squares.

Open and press hot, WITHOUT moving the iron, in order not to stretch 

the fabric, as you will now assemble your blocks along the bias sides. 

If you like you can spray starch to stabilize your fabrics.

 I didn't and had no problem, as I was careful with the ironing.

Trim the corners.

Assemble as shown.

Always open and press hot after each sewing.

I chose to assemble my work by squares rather than by rows, 

to avoid stretching the fabric by sewing long rows together. 

Go on assembling the rest of your blocks as shown.
